The Opportunity of Solar Run Businesses in Rural India

“Disease doesn’t just affect the patient; it impacts entire families.”

The business had a significant objective: to modernise the production of Eri silk—one of Assam’s most prized traditional crafts—while addressing the frequent power shortages faced by weavers in remote areas. Eri silk, known for its eco-friendliness and luxurious texture, is central to Assam’s cultural and economic landscape. However, the traditional reeling process is time-consuming and inefficient, leading the innovator to develop reeling machines that could boost productivity.

As an evaluator, we looked at the impact of the incubation on businesses and subsequent solar integration efforts in the region. The reeling machines cost about ₹6,000 without solar integration, which is affordable but dependent on unreliable grid power. With the addition of solar panels, the price increases to ₹25,000-₹30,000—an investment that many weavers initially found steep but crucial for those facing frequent power cuts.

The majority of the weavers were opting for machines without solar powered systems. The decision largely came down to the financial capability of the weavers. While solar integration added to the cost, it provided these artisans with the freedom to work uninterrupted, ensuring productivity even in power-deficient areas. The project highlighted not just the cost implications of adopting clean energy but also the tangible benefits it offers to small-scale industries. The weaving community, with their deep-rooted connection to Eri silk production, could now expand their business with modern equipment, all while being less reliant on conventional energy sources.

The integration of solar energy into small, rural businesses like this one has immense potential. In regions where access to reliable electricity is a constant struggle, solar power presents an opportunity to create long-term solutions for uninterrupted productivity. For the weavers of Assam, it can mean better livelihoods, reduced energy costs, and increased self-reliance.

However, the challenges of solar adoption in rural and local businesses cannot be ignored. The high upfront costs deter many small-scale entrepreneurs, even when long-term benefits are clear. Furthermore, the technical expertise required for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of solar systems is often lacking in remote areas. Financing models, training, and awareness campaigns are critical to helping local businesses tap into the full potential of solar power. If we can address the initial cost barriers and provide adequate support, solar-powered businesses could be the driving force for sustainable economic growth in rural regions across India.

The Cost of Getting Sick

On March 10th, 2025, Amol, Faizan, and I presented the findings of three cancer care projects implemented across Maharashtra and Karnataka. The work had taken us into hospitals, into waiting rooms, into conversations that allowed me to see health funding in a new light.

After conducting assessments on multiple cancer and health programs, a key learning has stuck with me: disease does not arrive alone. It brings with it a cascade that most health funding is not designed to address. The diagnosis is the beginning of an unravelling of savings, of routines, of the quiet assumptions a family makes about its future. When the primary earner is the one who is sick, income stops. When it is the mother who is sick, childcare stops. Debt begins. Assets are considered. Older children are pulled from school. A family that was managing, perhaps just barely, begins to slide and sometimes the slide that starts with a cancer diagnosis can last a generation.

This is what we saw in the field: not just sick people, but families mid-fall. And what we also saw in the projects we assessed, was what it looks like when something catches them.

The projects we assessed worked at different points of the same crisis. One equipped hospitals with diagnostic technology, so that cancers caught later, at the stage when treatment is most expensive and outcomes most uncertain, might instead be caught earlier. Another helped advanced-stage patients access private hospital care at subsidised rates, bypassing the months-long waiting lists at public facilities that a body in crisis simply cannot afford to keep waiting. A third wrapped children with cancer in a complete financial safety net: chemotherapy, nutrition, emergency funding, palliative care, everything, so that no family had to calculate which part of treatment they could skip.

What the project recognized is that the system alone will not hold these families. Public hospitals are overwhelmed. Government schemes, designed for scale, leave gaps at the edges: the patient too sick to qualify, the geography too remote to reach, the case too complex to fit a standard rate card. And into those gaps, people fall.

This is where CSR has something to offer that is genuinely distinct. CSR is not bound by the logic of the majority. Because a life is not a statistic. And poverty is not just a present condition, it is a future of the family being weighed down in obligations, slowly, through the compound interest of untreated illness, abandoned schooling, and debt that never quite clears. When CSR funds a mother’s treatment to completion, it is not only funding her recovery. It is funding the trajectory of the children who will grow up with her still in the room.

Amol, Faizan, and I spoke to doctors, social workers, hospital administrators, and patients. What the stakeholders said, again and again, in different registers, was the same thing: continuity matters. Support during diagnosis is not enough. Support during treatment is not enough. What people need is someone willing to stay for the whole journey. The moment three months after discharge when a family is still fragile and the formal support has already moved on.

The projects we evaluated understood this, imperfectly but earnestly. And the outcomes showed it: patients completing treatment who would otherwise have stopped, families emerging without the debt that would have followed them for years, children whose mothers came home.

Skill Development & Apprenticeships: The new report on Revitalizing India’s Apprenticeship Ecosystem (Feb/Mar 2026) suggests a shift in CSR strategy toward deeper integration between corporate training and public education to address the "skills gap."

AI in CSR: A new trend report from Goodera for 2026 notes that AI is moving CSR from "intuition-led" to "insight-led." Large corporations are increasingly using AI to predict "engagement drop-offs" in volunteering and to automate complex impact reporting for social programs. Here is a framework they have provided specifically for CSR’s looking to integrate AI.

The Power of Collaboration

Recently, I had the chance to travel across four districts in Karnataka to understand the impact of a lake rejuvenation project. What I found was not just restored water bodies- but stories of revival, resilience, and deep-rooted connection between people and their land.

Lakes in Karnataka have always held significance. Historically built by rulers like the Cholas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara empire, these lakes weren’t just about water- they were about life. They nourished farms, supported biodiversity, and brought communities together.

But with time, and modern infrastructure taking over, many of these lakes were forgotten. Encroached upon, choked with silt, and starved of maintenance, they lost their purpose- and their presence.

Yet, change is happening. And it’s collaborative.

In this project, I saw what’s possible when everyone shows up:

• Corporations provided the funding to desilt the lakes.

• Local communities transported the nutrient-rich silt to their farmlands, giving them better yield.

• The implementing NGO ensured technical expertise and on-ground mobilization.

• And nature? It started responding- slowly, quietly, beautifully.

Rejuvenating a lake isn’t just about infrastructure. It’s about trust. About participation. About everyone having skin in the game.

At NuSocia, we often say that the best solutions are built not in isolation, but in collaboration. This project reminded me why we believe that so deeply.

Because when people come together - across sectors, across roles - real change doesn’t just happen. It sustains.

This Academic case study explores how the humble arecca plant created a whole new industry of sustainable plates in the Northeast. Umang’s core design of working with women, building skills, and encouraging resourcefulness naturally aligns with the principles of upcycling. The project demonstrates that when communities are empowered with basic skills, simple tools, and a mindset of reuse, they can create high-value outputs from materials that would otherwise be discarded.

Umang’s resource-light enablers:

• Skill first, materials second: Women learn design, stitching, repair, and transformation techniques that allow them to convert waste fabrics, old garments, packaging materials, and offcuts into new products.

• Community collection loops: Households and local businesses donate materials, instantly reducing the need for procurement.

Lighting Up Wishes with Technology: How NuSocia Reimagined the Joy of Giving

Diwali, in today’s times, often feels like a celebration confined to our own homes filled with family gatherings, sweets, and lights. Yet, every year, it reminds us of something deeper: the opportunity to spread light, joy, and hope beyond ourselves.

This year at NuSocia, we had the privilege of turning that spirit into something truly special by combining compassion with innovation. And this experience was made possible through one of our esteemed clients, for whom we manage CSR monitoring and evaluation.

It began with a simple conversation. The client wanted to explore meaningful ways for employees to engage through CSR activities. While several initiatives were already underway, the question arose “Can employees participate more personally, perhaps even virtually?”

That question sparked a beautiful idea: What if we could celebrate Diwali with children from an orphanage not just with words, but with gifts that bring their dreams to life?

After exploring options, NuSocia identified a Pune-based NGO that provides residential care and holistic rehabilitation for 27 orphaned and HIV/AIDS-affected children and young adults (ages 5–21), offering medical care, education, and vocational training in tailoring to promote self-reliance.

When we connected with the organization, they shared a heartfelt wishlist, two wishes from each child. But soon came a challenge: the wishlist was in an Excel sheet. Sharing it across all employees risked confusion like what if multiple people booked the same gift, or some wishes were missed entirely?

That’s when we decided to let technology lend a hand or perhaps, a little heart.

Instead of relying on manual tracking, our tech team created a simple, user-friendly digital platform where each child’s wish appeared individually. Employees could browse, book, and confirm their chosen gift instantly ensuring complete transparency, no duplication, and real-time tracking.

To make participation even smoother, our creative team designed a concise, visually engaging two-page guide to walk employees through the process. The platform didn’t just simplify logistics but it built an emotional bridge. Each employee could see the name and wish of the child they were gifting to, transforming a digital interaction into a personal moment of joy.

Within just three days, every single wish all 54 of them were booked. From JCB toys to Barbie doll sets, from dresses to small pieces of jewelry, each gift carried with it a story of care and connection.

At NuSocia, this initiative reaffirmed what we deeply believe that technology, when infused with empathy, can make kindness more meaningful. Whether it’s building robust data systems for CSR or creating simple yet thoughtful tools like this one.

The curtain has closed on NuSocia’s Season 5 of Facets of Impact, and what a journey it has been! We brought together leading experts from policy, technology, and the social sector to navigate one of the most transformative forces of our time: Artificial Intelligence.

Traditional tribal livelihoods, once tied to the forest, are now restricted, pushing communities into mine labor or subsistence farming, often compounded by issues like alcohol abuse.

Rectifying this isn’t about isolated interventions. It requires a holistic overhaul: accessible, robust healthcare; localized, well-resourced education; diversified, sustainable livelihoods that honor traditional knowledge; and systemic support to rebuild community resilience. This isn’t a problem that can be fixed with a quick band-aid; it demands a complex set of interconnected systems to rectify the erosion of traditional practices and truly address the deep-rooted issues facing these resilient communities.

In northwest Delhi, there are thousands of young people who are taking messages of disease prevention and health promotion to their peers to make a difference. Scaling Up Integration of NCDs in Primary Care
