Expert Speaks
For understanding the aspects of Rural entrepreneurship we talked with Mr. Anirban Gupta (Co-Founder, Dhriiti-The Courage Within) where he talks about the crucial role of entrepreneurship in arresting migration.
Q.1 Can promoting Rural Entrepreneurship help in reducing migration from rural to urban centres?
The reason for migration is mainly economic reasons, especially pertaining to the means of livelihood. The migration would reduce if these economic requirements are met in the village itself.
The village economy can be seen as a “leaky bucket” where the input comes from the Government and the local resources. However, there are a lot of leakages too in the form of people going out to cities. Thus, the overall level of the village economy keep on reducing. The solution to plug the leakages or gaps are local entrepreneurs who use local resources, people and create products which can be sold locally and globally. Thereby the level of the village economy steadily goes up with the gaps being plugged.
More rural entrepreneurs created is better for the status of the village economy with better resources available and better markets leading to an overall improvement in quality of life in the villages which in turn would reduce migration.
Q.2 How can rural entrepreneurship be promoted?
Rural entrepreneurship first needs to be made aspirational for upcoming village entrepreneurs. The second crucial aspect is to create a supportive ecosystem. Organisations working in the rural space and Government should work in synergy which would allow rural entrepreneurs to provide the above two things.
A traditional success story of a social entrepreneur seems something like this - an individual comes up with an idea, finds funders and launches the said idea. They see immediate social impact and returns for investors. They quickly replicate the model and expand.
