Expert Speaks
Each issue of the newsletter we bring to you some expert opinion from industry leaders on the topic. We recently spoke to Ms Akshima Ghate (Director, RMI) about the impact of COVID on the mobility sector. Here is an excerpt from the interview.
Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, what impact do you see on the transportation sector and how do you think it will recover?
We will definitely see a reduction in transportation demand - this may be good for the environment but not really for several start-ups who have entered into the mobility industry developing mobility designs because they made their products based on pre-COVID mobility projections - there is now a need to do rethinking and readjusting.
The public transport ridership will see a downturn in the short term which is a point of concern because we have been wanting to promote public transport. People would in the short term refrain from public transport. This would actually lead to increased usage of private transport- we may also see an increased demand for second hand personal vehicles because of safety in transportation. In the pre-COVID world our criteria for choosing a transport was time and cost but in the post COVID world safety will also become a criteria."
