Hello NuSocia Patrons,
We live in the age of what scientists are calling the Anthropocene Epoch, an era characterized by human impact on Earth’s geology and ecosystems. For the first time in history at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP21, the world universally agreed to reduce emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change under the Paris Accord agreement. Since then, the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and a global pandemic has underscored the need to act quickly. The climate goals are clear – reaching net-zero emissions by mid-century and avoiding a global temperature increase of 1.5 °C
Given the focus on COP26, we dedicate this edition of the Impact Post to Climate Change.
Did You Know
The world’s top three emitter countries contribute 16 times the greenhouse gas emissions of the Bottom 100.
So far, more than 189 countries have ratified or otherwise joined the Paris Climate Agreement, representing more than 81% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 93% once the United States rejoins.
50% reduction in emissions is required by 2030 to limit warming by 1.5 degrees, in line with Paris agreement. If pre COP policies continue, the temperature would increase by 2.7 degrees by 2100.
This rise in temperature implies risk of life due to rising sea levels to 800m people by 2021
Over 5200+ business and 450+ financial institutions have committed to science based net zero targets.
