Hello NuSocia Patrons,
This first newsletter of 2022, we wanted to share a simple dream - a dream about Hope.
We hope that everyone gets a chance to do what they want to
We hope that all food that gets produced and prepared, goes to use, not to waste
We hope everyone has the right to seek help, when they need it
We hope everyone have the same opportunity to go to school
We hope there is no hobby or profession which is restricted to any one gender
We hope that we can open a tap anywhere and drink clean water without fear of falling sick
We hope that we don’t have to finish natural resources to create energy
We hope noone is judged by their looks, wealth, culture, sex or even clothes
Some of these dreams are what makes up the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs. As Sustainability is becoming more and more part of common discourse as more and more organisations making one or all of the 17 SDGs as part of their vision, it is important for the people associated with the social development sector - you and us, to make sure that the SDGs are being addressed in its true spirit and no greenwashing (or namesake action) is happening by any actor. Each one of us have that responsibility towards our planet. The hope is that if we all work together, across borders and backgrounds, we can achieve these goals.
With this hopeful spirit, we hereby dedicate this edition of Impact Post towards Hope - a feeling raised in entire humanity bu SDGs.
Did You Know
The idea of SDGs came from the Rio+20 Summit in 2012 – which was the largest summit in UN history!
These goals are the result of a three-year process involving 83 national surveys engaging over 7 million people, making it the biggest consultation in UN history.
From governance experts to climate researchers, and from the academic community to the International Council for Science, have all agreed to these goals which was a first in history.
India has a state SDG Index (https://www.niti.gov.in/sdg-india-index ) which ranks states and UTs into four categories - Aspirant, Performer, Front Runner and Achiever.
There has been nation-wide improvement in ‘clean water and sanitation’ and ‘affordable and clean energy’. Kerala achieved the highest overall score in the Index followed by Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Goa !
Anuj Navle, a young NuSocian, shares his views on comparative SDG and how he views the number play - Hope for India To perform better in year 2022 to achieving its Sustainable Development Goals
Essential Reads
In the age of constant distraction of unending media and video distraction, we are a little old fashioned at NuSocia and recommend reading as food for thoughts. For our new readers, this is a section where we bring out our favourite reads and recommendations.
The Book of Hope, by Better India - is our first recommendation on the reading list this month and going by the name of the book itself, we don’t need to tell why !
“The book is one more reason to believe in our country and the 1.3 billion people who inhabit it. We hope this book shows you that India is much, much better than you think”, says the authors Anuradha Kedia and Dhimant Parekh, founders of The Better India.
For Fiction lovers, our second recommendation on the reading list for this first month of the year, is The Humans by Matt Haig, it is a novel about an alien who visits Earth in the form of a Cambridge University professor — and though initially disgusted by everything about humanity, he slowly warms up to them.
Finally, for those who loves reading things online - here is our compilation of 3 interesting blogs that you can follow, which carries the message of positivity and hope.
